Stephenie Meyer Houston Host Signing
Report -- Stephenie Meyer Host Signing - Houston

I got out of work by 5pm and got to the high school across Houston sometime after 6pm. I was 3 rows from the back, and had something of a 3.5 hour wait to make it to Stephenie to get my book signed after she spoke. I brought my hardcover copy of Eclipse to be signed, along with my copy of the Host.

This was my view of Stephenie:

You can hear what she said through the lexicon and youtube, with footage taken by people who were much closer then me:

I completely love and ADORE Stephenie Meyer. Everything I've read and seen, everytime she talks, I'm impressed at how fabulous, kind, and real she is. She's just a fangirl like the rest of us, along with being a wonderful writer and adorable person. Love you, Stephenie!

Information that was new to me and impressed me from the questions she answered:
The character her editors had wanted her to "kill off" in the Twilight revisions was Renee. I had been wondering about who it was. I'm glad she didn't succumb, because that would have added a lot of unnecessary angst, and Bella is emo enough as it is.
The ribbon on the cover of Eclipse represents how Bella is trying to cut the ties of her human life, and how that can never be done cleanly--the ribbon is frayed and still partially attached. I hadn't heard that before, and that was cool.

One of my major goals when I decided it was worth the hassle to get out of work and drive all over to make it to Stephenie's signing, was that I wanted to give her some original art to show to show my appreciation for these wonderful stories she has created.

I've been afflicted with some [mighty annoying] depression in the last few months, and the Twilight series has been about the only thing that would lift me up and make me feel happier. I've gone through the audiobooks about 5 to 8 times, and the Twilight cds have been in rotation in my car CD player.

Overtime at work and my constant companion Procrastination led to me not finishing the little paintings I wanted to give her in time (they are on my drawing table right now, and I will finish them). So....I brought my drawing supplies and drew her pictures while sitting "in line". They (thankfully) let us sit until our row was called, so I sketched, inked, and markered in a mad dash, and had plenty of time to finish. I drew straight from my head, so they aren't perfect, but they aren't too bad. I had a clear plastic folder to put them in and I gave them to her when I got to her table.

Drawing in public gets me attention, which is fun. Thank you to everyone around me who complimented my work! It makes me feel all special. ^_^

Taken with my [mother's] digital camera:

I like Bella, but I'm not very satisfied with Edward.... poo.
pens and gray copic markers on bristol

Stephenie said: "That's very pretty!"

My inking when I don't have photoshop to clean it up. I forgot to blacken Alice's hair! Drat.

My verdict on The Host---it's WONDERFUL.
It didn't grab me and draw me in like most books, but that was likely because I couldn't AFFORD to be drawn in, I was so busy these last 2 weeks. I listened to the audiobooks after work while doing some projects. My thoughts were that depending on how she ended it, I would either love it, or never want to touch it again. The ending was WONDERFUL. It made me so happy. So it's on my "Repeat listening" playlist. :)

It's a 'love story' more than a 'romance'--it's about so many different types of love, and about all the sacrifices Wanderer is willing to make for these loves, because they are the strongest feelings she has ever felt. I love the character of Wanderer.

I highly recommend The Host.

I am jealous you got to meet Miss Meyer! :D Thanks for sharing!

I just began reading The Host myself... I that swear all of Stephenie's books are like candy!

XD

Her books are like straight shots of emotion-ful estrogen. They make me want to feel things more strongly, instead of just drifting like I generally do.

I'm excited that you got to give her art!

In case you hadn't read the actual book yet, I wanted to mention that between The Host's audiobook and hard copy, I'd say I enjoyed my experience with the hard copy more. In particular.. after chapter 58, when Wanda goes to see Doc for the last time, there are several blank pages, which give the reader the heart-stopping notion that perhaps that's the end. It's a really clever device that Stephenie used very effectively in New Moon, as well, and you really don't get the same effect in the audiobook.

I did read the last in paper form, and I want to read all of it in paper again too. :) Its just so much easier to find time for listening then it is to find time to read! In the car, doing housework, while drawing and painting... But things are more immersive when you read them, and I love being immersed, so yeah.

Oh, good! I just didn't want you to miss that detail.

It is nice to have the audio option for books, when you need your hands and eyes for other things. I like listening to books while I'm at work, because it gives me more momentum than just listening to music (or nothing at all). Lately I've fallen in love with a few period mysteries - the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt books by Anne Perry, particularly, and I'm almost finished with my second Elizabeth Peters "Amelia Peabody" Egyptology mystery. What are some of your favorite audiobooks?

Those sound lovely, I'll have to check them out!

Let's see:
everything by Lois McMaster Bujold (excellent scifi and fantasy), Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are WONDERFUL but completely unrestful (he keeps up the suspense), and Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series (Sookie is the most promiscuous character I actually like. And I really do, I adore her character voice). Various sex and violence warnings on all of those, btw.

And I've listened to the entire Twilight saga, like, 8 times through. They just make me feel good, so I love them.

I just started listening to several fabulous writing podcasts, if you want recommendations about those. XD

Ooh, yes, please. I've been listening to Brandon Sanderson's Writing Excuses, but that's the only one I know. What else is out there?

(that's an awesome icon)

They really are the best. Snappy and to the point, no extraneous rambling, and they have really good advice. I love that podcast. (And it's a bit hilarious that I know each one of them.) :]

The Secrets by Michael A. Stackpole is excellent. Now I need to go read something he's written!

I just started going through the archives of "I Should Be Writing", which looks promising. More rambling, though.

Just listened to "The Kissy Bits" on romance writing and industry. She's fun and no longer updating.

Dragon Page cover to cover has awesome author interviews and is fun.

Podcastle is fantasy short stories, and I'm positively loving it.

There's more out there, but I haven't listened to them yet.

On Twilight, Fire and Ice is the best I've found, for being thorough and intelligent. http://fireandice.mypodcast.com/

The Twilightseriestheories.com sisters are fun, adorable and adorably fun, but I often know more about what they are talking about then they do.

I need to do an official blog about this stuff.

Why oh why does itunes not always have every episode of a podcast that have been done! There are always blanks! It drive me nuts.
